Cinnamon Broomstick DIY Swag
Cinnamon Broomstick DIY Swag Idea
This cinnamon broomstick DIY swag is one of the best mini cinnamon broom decorating ideas to create a farmhouse swag.
The leaves are beginning to turn golden yellow and walnuts are ready for harvesting. The local orchard is brimming with apple delights. And the sunrise is taking her sweet time each morning, it’s mid-September on the farm.
That means I have been decorating our farmhouse for the season. The fireplace mantel is complete, the coffee bar is stocked with pumpkin pie syrup and fall-leaf cookies my daughter spotted at the market.
I’m still working on the small touches, like adding those long-awaited fall scents to each space. Last year I hung little cinnamon broomsticks in the laundry room and entryway for a bit of folklore and they smelled so good!
What is the purpose of a cinnamon broom? Or the cinnamon broom meaning and folklore about?
Traditionally cinnamon brooms were hung above doorways to shield negative influence.
“Usually made of pine straw and scented with cinnamon oil, cinnamon brooms are believed to bring good fortune and prosperity. Legend says they ward off evil spirits, making them extra fitting for Halloween time.”
Why not?
Cinnamon is a signature scent of the season and with all of the fun holidays approaching this DIY swag is the perfect way to welcome guests with a classic spiced aroma!

What is swag?
Don’t confuse swag with swagger, swag is a decoration that describes a suspended wreath that is not the typical round shape. Similar, but unlike a draped garland, a swag is hung pointing straight down.
I like to think of it as a gathered bundle or bouquet hung upside down.
This type of decoration is often displayed during the holidays and hung above a door frame or archway, or in place of a door wreath.
A cinnamon broomstick makes the perfect swag base with an iconic holiday fragrance that freshens the air.
What better way to welcome guests?
How do you make a homemade swag with a cinnamon broomstick?
Whether you want to know how to make a front door swag, a DIY floral sway, or a DIY fall swag, it’s easy when you start with a cinnamon broomstick base!
Its sturdy design will hold layers upon layers of fall foliage, florals, cinnamon sticks, and anything else you’d like to include.
Dress it up with velvet ribbon and a dried orange slice like I did. If you’re known to come home with more produce then you can use dry your own orange slices! When properly dried they last for years to come. Here’s how I dry oranges.
The beauty of making a DIY swag is that it’s truly customizable. Add fresh evergreen and jingle bells for Christmas or gather fresh herbs from your herb garden.
Tip – Because you’re hanging it upside down anything fresh will dry and preserve right on the broomstick!
It’s a great DIY project to make with friends or the kids. EVEN BETTER – gift one to your neighbors or share as a housewarming gift!

How long do cinnamon brooms keep their smell?
The scent of a cinnamon broomstick will last several weeks, generally enough time to get through the holiday season. When I pulled mine out of storage this year, the scent had mostly faded. But, there was no need to toss them.
How? THE BEST PART is you can revive it!
How do you recharge a cinnamon broom?
Liberally sprinkling the branches with cinnamon essential oil is a great hack to recharge a cinnamon broomstick!
I applied drops of cinnamon, lavender, eucalyptus, and orange essential oil to each of my broomsticks along with a fresh makeover. Learn how to revive your own into a fun DIY swag with tips and instructions I share below.
It’s a simple farmhouse project that’ll make your cinnamon brooms last.

here’s what you’ll need:
Easy DIY Swag
Step 1:
Gather your supplies, drying your orange slices first. Work on a cutting board or cover your surface.
Step 2:
Gather your lavender stems and use a low-heat glue gun to secure them to the front of a cinnamon broomstick. Press firmly into place, holding for several seconds. Then trim the stems with scissors.
Step 3:
Next, add three or more eucalyptus branches on top of the lavender and glue them into place.
Step 4:
Lay a good length of velvet ribbon (this one looks just like the ribbon I got at Magnolia Market) underneath the tip of the broomstick. Apply hot glue between each layer and press to secure. Then generously add glue to the tip of the broomstick and tie the ribbon around the swag into a thick knot.
Step 5:
Now, apply hot glue to the back of a dried orange slice and press to secure.
Step 6:
Then glue a cinnamon stick pointing upwards to the front of the orange slice, pressing to secure. Trim the velvet ribbon to your desired length.
Step 7:
For a finishing touch add 20 drops of cinnamon essential oil, 15 drops of lavender, 5 drops of eucalyptus, and 10 drops of orange to the broomstick bristles. Reapply essential oil as needed to refresh every few months.
